The task was aimed at an urban development concept for the use and upgrading of the area at the train station. As a result, a building based on a classic Göppingen gabled house was designed.

Project data

Within the framework of a planning competition, a structural solution was to be developed for an existing building complex with four storeys. Residential use on the upper floors as well as commercial use for retail and offices on the first floor and second floor were to be included in the planning. Urban planning aspects played a strong role: From Göppingen's main train station, Untere Marktstraße provides pedestrian access to the local city center. The design interprets this prominent urban location as a "modern city gateway". In this conceptual approach, the adjacent buildings also have a corresponding significance.

The concept provides for a coherent building structure that emphasizes the corner situations with significant special solutions. A special arrangement of openings strengthens the structure as a whole and subtly forms a base for retail spaces. Nevertheless, the building is not a solitaire, rather the typical gable-side development is taken over by an independent arrangement of the gable roofs and transferred into a modern architectural language.

By foregoing a small-scale structuring of the building in favor of a coherent overall solution, it self-confidently presents itself in an unconventional architecture and represents a completely independent solution. The different functions of use of the building on the first floor and roof area are dissolved in the central part of the building and ensure fusion into one structure.
