BOFA living and working quarter in Bonn. Transformation of an industrial wasteland.
The Bonn flag factory was one of the largest production facilities of its kind in Germany in the last century. It is an important part of Bonn's industrial history. This factory is being transformed into a new urban quarter while retaining its historic charm.
Architectural stylistic elements of the factory keep its special history alive. In combination with three complementary residential buildings, a modern, attractive place to stay, live and work is created for the people of Bonn.
The main building of the present factory complex is a former three-story barracks building, about 110 meters long, with a projecting dormer in the center and two corner towers facing the inner courtyard. Visible from the A565 highway, there is a prominent chimney with the recognizable white letters BOFA.
The site is 450 meters from the Rhine. The transformation into a lively living and working quarter reconnects the Bonner Fahnenfabrik with the adjacent district. The design idea is to create a pleasant living environment as a new central place for local residents. The design focuses on user comfort, connectivity, sustainability and atmosphere.
The goal is to create the healthiest and most pleasant living environment possible, keeping out highway noise and particulate matter. Shared mobility facilities, such as a smart bike hub, urban farming offerings and neighborhood green spaces are available to residents, users and residents alike. The mix of uses will include large and small businesses, restaurants, and a variety of housing for different target groups.
