Renovation of the Staufeneckhalle in Salach
Renovation with a focus on the structural framework, building fabric, and energy efficiency.
Project data
Structural System and Construction Quality
The hall’s structural framework consists of a shed roof made of prestressed precast concrete elements. Some of the roof elements are extremely thin, measuring only about 6 cm in thickness—a construction method that would no longer be feasible today and therefore holds exceptional architectural and cultural value.
An inspection conducted by the Materials Testing Institute at the University of Stuttgart confirmed that the structural framework is in very good condition, despite existing leaks in the roof. The striking structural framework significantly shapes the interior appearance of the hall and forms the basis for the renovation plan.
Background
The existing building exhibited significant structural and energy-efficiency deficiencies. Leaks in the roof and a completely uninsulated exposed aggregate concrete facade resulted in high energy losses and increased maintenance costs. Neither the roof nor the facade structure met current technical and energy-efficiency standards, making a comprehensive renovation necessary.

Renovation Plan
The renovation is guided by the principle of careful upgrading while preserving as much of the existing building fabric as possible. The goal is to visibly preserve the structural qualities while permanently improving the building envelope.

Roof Renovation
The precast concrete elements of the shed roof will be exposed, repaired, and fitted with a new layer of insulation. New drainage outlets will ensure safe and controlled drainage to the outside. These measures will preserve the delicate structure while significantly improving the roof’s thermal performance.

Facade renovation
The existing exposed aggregate concrete façade is complemented by prefabricated wood modules. These form a continuous insulation layer approximately 22 cm thick. A drainage system is also integrated into the façade modules. The new façade solution combines high energy efficiency with a clean, contemporary architectural style.

Result
The renovation of the Staufeneckhalle will ensure the long-term preservation of a landmark building in the community of Salach. The building’s distinctive structural framework will be preserved and remain visible, while the roof and facade will meet today’s standards for energy efficiency, durability, and user comfort.
