Märklin Museum in Goeppingen. Contemporary concept at a new location.
For the construction of the new museum directly at the headquarters of the model railway manufacturer Märklin, our office was commissioned together with the Dutch office MVRDV with a location analysis and feasibility study. The previous Märklin Museum no longer met the spatial and conceptual requirements of the global company, whose goal was to dissolve the previous museum at the old location and locate a contemporary museum building at the headquarters.
Project dataTwo specifications had to be taken into account: First, the integration of the historical collections at the headquarters in Goeppingen. Fresh concepts for the use of one of the existing buildings were developed for this purpose. The existing museum concept was to be supplemented with seminar rooms and catering. In addition to the design of the space on around 3,000 square meters of usable area, the external accessibility, visibility in the public space and its accessibility were also to be strategically included.
The proposal was to supplement the new "MÄRKLINeum" in the existing building with an annex in front of it that would provide a barrier-free exhibition depot. In this way, the separation of the functional areas of the collection archive and the exhibition, which is common in museums, could be eliminated. Before guests reach the top exhibition level, they are given generous and stimulating insights into the museum's holdings.
For the exhibition hall, a modular and flexible room design was planned for the presentation of the exhibits. The concept also included a restaurant in the attic and a museum store on the first floor and basement.
