Multi-generation house with daycare center in Salach. Central meeting place for a variety of functions.
The IBA'27 in the Stuttgart metropolitan region is a driver for ambitious urban or local development concepts. The municipality is using the area close to the town center to meet the increasing demand for childcare places and multicultural leisure activities. The terms of reference in this open realization competition called for a design of a building that combines meeting/social needs, multigenerational use and daycare center under one roof.
Project dataThe building's location on the northern edge of the competition area creates a link to the surrounding area. It opens up to the adjacent neighborhoods and creates a connection to the Schachenmayr site to the south. By breaking up the building block, it has both a gentle effect and at the same time provides the necessary zoning. Small forecourts open up in front of the entrances to provide orientation. Since the site is located on the bicycle route Industriekultur im Filstal, this is directly connected, linking two new quarters with each other and providing a link to the town center.
The open spaces adjoining the building to the south offer new qualities of stay for course participants as well as for passers-by and interested parties. The garden serves as a meeting place and a place to pause. A green belt along the railroad line provides noise protection, but allows visual connections at the level of the cycle path into the green space and to the building. A highlight is provided by the green roofscape for a variety of uses. The design of the open spaces provides for ecological diversity. Water areas serve as precipitation storage and the roof drainage is connected there.
Although the design represents a strong structure, its broken form has a softer effect and indicates the divisions into the three main uses. Accessibility to the garden is provided almost throughout - interior and exterior are fluidly linked. The daycare center is located in the eastern part of the building on two levels. The western part of the building houses counseling and creative rooms for multifunctional use. The middle section has a distribution function and offers meeting and catering facilities.
The building structure is flexible and expandable. With regard to the deconstructability of the building, attention should be paid to the use of local, recycled building products in the selection of materials. The planned greening of the facade creates natural shading, air humidification and habitat for animals. The design of the building is planned as a reinforced concrete skeleton structure with flat slabs and columns, with cores for bracing. The ceilings are used for component activation and as thermal storage mass. The facade is planned as a metal-glass facade with opening sashes for natural ventilation.
