In the urban planning competition for the development of a former industrial district, our concept shapes the living space of a community-oriented, modern and inclusive society. The result is a place with a strong sense of identity, short distances and an invigorating open space design. Through unsealing, renaturization and a community-promoting neighbourhood structure, life together and with nature will succeed.

Project data

Overall urban integration

In terms of urban planning, the district concept responds sensitively to the existence of the village structure in Faurndau and to the local scale. The present basic structure of the urban development concept is created through the formation of clusters. The result is a place with a strong identity, short distances and clear orientation. One of the existing buildings will also be integrated into the structure as a multi-purpose market hall. Together with it and the multi-generational playground, the adjacent neighborhood square forms the heart of the area. In a dialog with this central location, deliberately placed subterfuges throughout the area form further meeting points with a high quality of stay: playgrounds, inner courtyards with characteristic tree planting and flexibly usable open spaces invite residents to take a walk, linger, work - in short: to live together and with nature.

The district is designed as a car-free area with parking facilities in several decentralized locations.

Architectural concept

A uniform and clear architectural language for the development creates an identity specific to the district. The design of the buildings is based on the existing scale and develops towards the Fils with increasing volumes. This allows both a connection to the existing residential development as well as an integration of the existing buildings worthy of preservation. Versatile and flexible forms of living with clear, people-oriented floor plans are implemented. Floor-to-ceiling loggias and windows flood the rooms with light and allow the green space and the Fils river to visually penetrate the apartments.

Open space concept

The generous planted areas act as the "green lungs" of the district and ensure an ecologically and climatically sustainable cityscape. Inner courtyard structures in the west contribute to the address formation with characteristic tree plantings. The riverbank along the urban quarter will be enhanced with numerous seating elements. Seating steps and a wooden deck in the middle of the quarter bring visitors close to the water and invite them to linger and fish. To the south, there is a natural park with numerous recreational facilities close to the city. Curious visitors will find a nature education concept in the form of information steles. These focus on the habitat of insects and animals worthy of protection as well as flood protection.

Utilization

The newly formed district combines a variety of uses for everyday life. Initially, the flexibly designed multi-storey residential buildings will house owner-occupied or rental properties for all generations with their different needs.

Small-scale commercial units are located in the first floor zones, with a particular focus on services close to everyday life. These facilities are supplemented by the central market hall. This will house market stalls for local traders as well as the planned food factory, which will consist of several small food outlets and individual zones with seating. The use as a flexible event space - to be rented in full or only in part - is ideal and enables uncomplicated catering for events by the caterers present. The daycare center on the edge of the district is a high-quality childcare facility within walking distance.
