Fire station in Schwäbisch Gmünd-Rehnenhof. Part of an award-winning wooden building ensemble.
A fire station was built in the Schwäbisch Gmünd district of Rehnenhof Wetzgau. The building was awarded the "Small Hugo-Häring Prize" in the ensemble of the adjacent Friedensschule and received recognition at the German Timber Construction Award.
Project dataThe task consisted of site management for the realization of the functional building of the Wetzgau fire department. The award-winning design by Christoph Bijok also included the renovation and expansion of the school, which is located in the immediate vicinity. Thus, a uniformly coordinated image of two buildings could be realized, whose use could not be more different.
The fire department is designed as a passive house. Wood is an essential component of the entire building, including in the supporting structure, facade and interior furnishings. The fire station was designed as a single-story vehicle hall without a basement and offers space for three fire engines. A two-story social wing and a fire department training yard complete the building.
Since the volunteer fire department does not need central facilities such as a hose washing plant and drying tower, a simple room program was implemented with the requirement of short distances. On the first floor, adjacent to the vehicle hall, there are changing rooms with a capacity of up to 40 people as well as the wet rooms. The social rooms and storage areas are located on the upper floor.
The school building and the fire station appear as an ensemble due to their outer shells with larch wood cladding, yet they differ in their appearance: While the school building clearly opens up for its visitors, the fire station defines itself more as a functional functional building due to its minimized window areas.
