The city of Meppen is planning the construction of the new Meppen fire station, which is scheduled for completion by January 12, 2026, based on an architectural competition from early 2022, the winning design of which will be developed further. The location was moved to a strategically more favorable site on the "Schützenhof" road near the B70. The aim is to make optimum use of the resources of the town and the Meppen fire department, which consists of around 125 members and 35 youth firefighters.

Project data

The new location of the Meppen fire station is at the Schützenhof near the B70. The planning area covers around 15,000 m². One challenge is the development of the site, which will be solved as part of the project. The main access is via the Schützenhof road, which offers optimal connections.

On the first floor, the changing areas with showers are directly accessible from the emergency parking lot, with direct access to vehicle hall I. This is framed by the wash bay, team management room and equipment maintenance room, ensuring that there is always a view of the vehicle yard. Visitors enter the building via the main entrance in the north-east. Opposite vehicle hall I is vehicle hall II, both of which form the vehicle yard that is closed to the west and open to the east. A passageway in the south-west facilitates access.

The site will be extensively greened, with extensive green roofs and a PV system. Wildflowers and grasses promote biodiversity.

The upper floor houses meeting rooms and offices, the operations center and the common room with an outdoor terrace. This is where the emergency services spend time after operations and exercises to promote a sense of community.

The fire station is being built using sustainable timber construction with a recycled concrete floor slab. The timber frame walls and prefabricated façade elements ensure efficient construction and high precision. The building layout includes a training tower, forecourt, foyer, headquarters, side wing and vehicle yard. Optimizations include new bicycle parking spaces, reorganized changing rooms for the youth fire department and a covered entrance to the second vehicle hall.
