Fire station in Freital. Versatile cube creates independent retreats.
The new fire station blends into the surrounding structure with a simple, functionally designed structure. The building is designed as a simple structure that differentiates various areas on the upper floors and forms green spaces on roof terraces, which are enclosed by transparently designed spaces. The green areas provide different uses each with high quality and quiet outdoor spaces.
The functionally structured and robust building is planned in timber construction and its execution is simple and clear. The design plays with the theme of closed and open parts of the facade.
A direct exit of the fire department vehicles via the central square and with exit via Dresdner Straße guarantees a smooth and fast operation in case of emergency. At the main entrance, which is accessible from the west, the open foyer with a free-standing staircase invites visitors to enter and connects the various uses on the floors with each other via the stairwell and elevator shaft. In the case of the terraces, the possibility of barrier-free access is ensured by appropriate detailing. The outdoor facilities are also designed without steps and thresholds to ensure good accessibility.
The areas of the volunteer and full-time fire departments have been separated from each other within the building, as desired by the client, in order to ensure optimal conditions for both user groups. In the southern part of the building, the two-story vehicle hall with direct connection to the radio and command center forms the heart of the fire station. The second floor takes up the three-part structure of the first floor. However, the incision of the roof terrace interrupts this and thus provides an interesting architectural accent.
