Fire station in Schwäbisch Gmünd. sensitive extension in the context of the place.
The basic idea of the concept is to use as much of the existing building as possible and to reduce new construction measures to a minimum. The old building will be sensitively converted; the room structures will be retained. This means that operations can be maintained even during the construction work.
Project dataThe new vehicle hall is positioned as a pavilion-like functional building. Access is via a single-story entrance area as a building joint that connects the old and new buildings. The resulting joint recedes in front of the other building structures and at the same time creates a symbiosis between old and new. The two-sided transparent vehicle hall offers an inviting presentation area for the emergency vehicles and thus allows them to become part of the public space.
The new fire station is accessed via the connecting building. The locker rooms (men's and women's) and the new vehicle hall are located at ground level. Below the vehicle hall is a small underground garage with the necessary parking spaces. The access areas of the existing building will be left as they are, so that the necessary escape and rescue routes will be available in sufficient numbers. This measure also offers the possibility of different simultaneous uses in the building with different accesses.
The one-story intermediate building offers the possibility to enter the changing rooms as well as the new vehicle hall from both sides. The glazing of the vehicle doors creates a bright and friendly hall that offers both views into and out of the staging areas and the park. The first floor of the administrative section houses the changing rooms and sanitary facilities for the fire department; the second floor houses the commandant, radio and command staff.
The vehicle hall is planned as a wooden structure while the new corner of the building is planned as a solid structure and continues the tradition. Great importance is attached to maximum climate protection. This is characterized on the one hand by the compact construction form, on the other hand by the proposed materials: The vehicle hall is designed in CO2-friendly and optimized timber construction. The deliberate use of natural materials creates a house with charm, a house where people like to gather - a house with charisma and soul.
