In Spangdahlem, two new schools provide space for a total of 625 students of U.S. military personnel and for around 90 employees. There was an ironclad principle: At U.S. bases abroad, there must be no compromise in the quality of life for employees and their families.

Project data

A functional structure is clearly recognizable both inside and out - important both for students' identification with their areas and for orientation overall, which is emphasized by clear color assignments and clear signage.

The ambitious pedagogical concept (21st Century School) was successfully transformed into architecture and building technology. This includes the fact that rooms can be quickly and flexibly redesigned by teachers and children. This concept was developed under the guidance of Barack Obama together with leading American entrepreneurs.

Central building blocks of the "21st Century School" concept are spatial offers of learning communities and specialized rooms for art, music and natural sciences. Places to linger, for joint activities, as well as gymnasiums and sports fields were created. A resource center with media and information offerings was established. The architecture connects all these elements spatially and functionally.
