Wieseneck Foundation Children's House in Goeppingen-Jebenhausen. Increasing demand makes extension necessary.
The increasing demand for childcare places prompted the board of the Wieseneck Foundation to renovate, convert and expand the existing Wieseneck children's home in the Jebenhausen district of Göppingen. We took over the tendering, awarding and construction management for the competition winner a+r Architekten.
Project dataThe award-winning design succeeded in dealing with the dilapidated fabric of the existing kindergarten building and supplementing it with a harmonious extension. The historic existing building is located on a generous plot of land with existing trees on the edge of the village. The extension was to be integrated there and at the same time develop its own identity. A building was realized that creates a subtle contrast to the existing building with its plaster facade and gable roof. With a vertical, rounded wooden facade, which radiates warmth and openness through its materiality, this has been well achieved.
Both parts of the building are connected to form an ensemble by an intermediate glass structure. The extension was designed with sustainability in mind. The compact building envelope minimizes heat loss due to its small surface area. In addition, the old tree population could be preserved.
Full-day care is also offered at the children's house, so that some children spend up to ten hours on the premises. Approximately 150 children between the ages of one and ten are cared for. The children's house offers sufficient space for eight groups. Therefore, the most diverse needs of the children have been taken into account. The heart of the children's house is the play staircase, which winds gently through the center of the new building and provides clear access to the individual areas: diverse play zones in front of the group rooms, seating areas and quieter areas for resting and relaxing. The color concept is adapted to the different zones. It provides the basis for animation through the use of the children and subordinates itself.
