Children's and youth campus in Remchingen. Winning design with convincing concept.
The task of this Europe-wide, open realization competition included the design of a kindergarten, a cafeteria and a student care center including an open space concept in the direct vicinity of an existing school.
Project data
The structures are connected to the schoolyard both visually and functionally. In the design of both buildings, the rooms are clearly arranged and offers flexibility in uses.
Inside, the concept focuses on clear floor plans, short distances, and flexible rooms. Central access areas encourage chance encounters and social interaction, while clearly zoned functional areas allow for retreat, concentration, and age-appropriate care. Generous openings and visual connections between indoor and outdoor spaces strengthen the connection to the surroundings and create bright, friendly learning and recreation areas.

The work impresses with the high flexibility of its floor plans and fits into its surroundings in a restrained way.

Beautiful, sheltered outdoor spaces offer a high quality of stay. The facades of both buildings are characterized by vertical wooden slats. The energy concept is simple and intelligent; both buildings can be expected to have good economic efficiency in construction and operation.
The staircase at the center of the atrium at the Remchingen Children’s and Youth Campus serves as the spatial and atmospheric heart of the building. As a sculptural element, it not only functionally connects the different levels but also creates an open space for interaction that fosters communication and helps visitors find their way.
The lighting design significantly enhances the architectural impact of the staircase. A large skylight spans the stairwell, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the building and, in combination with the natural materials, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

A key feature of the project is its versatility throughout the day: the cafeteria not only serves as a place to eat, but also as a social meeting place for different age groups. The daycare and childcare areas are organized in such a way that they function independently, while remaining part of the shared campus.
The project is now in the implementation phase, with the competition concept gradually taking shape in the built environment. The consistent implementation of the urban planning and architectural guiding principle ensures that the campus will function in the long term as an open, lively, and sustainable place of education and encounter for Remchingen.
Our architecture focuses on people. We are building for those who will later learn, eat, play, laugh and live in the children's and youth campus. That's why we involved schoolchildren in the design of the roof garden. The documentary video shows how much enthusiasm and creativity the children put into thinking about form, color, material, light and much more.
