Friedensschule in Schwäbisch Gmünd-Rehnenhof. A wooden building with exemplary character.
Excellent work is confirmed by worthy awards: The building was awarded the "Small Hugo-Häring Prize" and received recognition at the German Timber Construction Award.
Project dataThe task consisted of site management for the renovation and expansion of the school complex. The award-winning design by Christoph Bijok also included the construction of a new fire station in the immediate vicinity.
The school building is designed as a passive house. Wood is an essential component of the project. The renewable building material is used, among other things, in the areas of supporting structure, facade, floor, as well as in the entire interior design.
The renovation work inside the school included the toilet facilities, the installation of an elevator and an escape staircase. In addition, a new room layout was implemented by optimizing the classrooms and relocating the teachers' room. The new extension building houses the teachers' room, school administration, library, music hall and all-day school.
The school building and the fire station appear as an ensemble due to their outer shells with larch wood cladding, yet they differ in their appearance: While the school building clearly opens up for its visitors, the fire station defines itself more as a functional functional building due to its minimized window areas.
