The location of the high school directly on the forest area and the surrounding small-scale urban structure are characteristic for the design. Following the pedagogical concept, the new building presents itself as a natural learning landscape, which is structured according to the requirements. The forest literally flows over the building elements, green characterizes the spaces in between, interlocks with existing woody plants and is predominant in the break yards. The new building does not correspond to the classical building - nature and school form a unity. The building parts are clearly structured, form so-called compartments and offer the desired flexibility for teachers and students to the highest degree. Sustainability runs through the entire design concept.

Special feature: compartments form the building structure

The compartments form their own sections of the building. The school home of the young people is spatially clearly formulated in compartments and systematically located in the building. This supports orientation in the building. The compartments are coordinated with the construction grid. Each has direct access to the sanitary and teaching materials room.

The surrounding area is characterized by large-scale structures on the school campus and by small-scale structures outside the campus. The new building of the Emil-von-Behring-Gymnasium fits in to the west of the existing cafeteria. It appears rather planar and thus ties in with the existing ensemble. The building's height variations pick up on the natural height gradients. Thus, the integration ("burying") of the new gymnasium into the slope also makes sense. A new, homogeneous unit is created within the campus. The new school building opens towards the forest and forms a bracket between the green zone and the existing building. The building structure is both expandable and reducible. A kind of square serves as a distributor. The main entrance of the new school, the entrance of the existing library and the entrance of the future sports hall are connected there. Seating completes this area. To the south, further outdoor areas are connected and offer additional recreational qualities with seating steps.

Green outdoor spaces, green roofs and the preservation of existing trees promote and safeguard biodiversity and have a positive effect on the microclimate. The use of space is appropriate and the flexible structures allow for multiple uses. Due to the choice of materials - including modular timber construction / timber hybrid construction - resources are protected. They are reusable and flow into the circular economy (cradle to cradle). Inspiring spaces are created, which in their entirety have an identity-forming effect as a new school building. The focus is on creating a long-lasting, timeless building that serves as a role model.
