A lot of attention for the fire department timber construction

On normal days, the parking lot of the fire department Tübingen-Lustnau is usually empty - the volunteer fire department only occupies it during operations. Today, things are different: In addition to the fire department's red-painted emergency vehicles, there are now press transfer vans lined up next to dark diplomatic limousines.

The inauguration ceremony of the new fire station receives a lot of attention: After all, it's not every day that you see a fire station that - apart from the floor slab and elevator shaft - is built 100% of wood.

Built climate protection from regional raw materials

For the State Minister of Forestry, Peter Hauk, it is clear that "timber construction will occupy us this century". And because building culture has to change, he calls the building a "role model" and is "proud of what has been created.

A total of 380 cubic meters of wood were used - exclusively wood from regional and FSC-certified forestry in Allgäu and the Black Forest. Due to the high degree of prefabrication of the timber frame construction, the construction time was only 17 months.

Gaus Architekten have achieved an aesthetic masterpiece here and architecturally made the best of the requirements and materials.

A building for its users and beyond

For the mayor of Tübingen, timber construction represents a turning point in climate-friendly building. The Lustnau fire station is also a turning point for the local fire department and a "building that meets the requirements; a building that the fire department deserves. For Palmer, a turnaround in the German bureaucratic landscape is still to come - in his speech, he spoke out in favor of reducing bureaucracy in construction.

Christian Gaus concurs with this wish and pays his respects to the fire department for its voluntary commitment to the common good. Before symbolically handing over a cake in the shape of the fire station, the architect also praises the city of Tübingen, which has shown courage with the construction. The new fire station should become "a beacon in the region".

Fire station as a magnet - and as a home

State Minister Hauk also predicts that the building will become a beacon. He predicts that there will be "pilgrims and pilgrimages" from all over the country who will want to take a look at the fire station - and perhaps imitate it. After all, the wood not only contributes to climate protection, but also creates a warm atmosphere, just like in Vorarlberg.

So the parking lot will probably not be empty very often in the future. If only because the Lustnau fire department itself likes to be there: Department commander Fromm ends the official part of the event with the convincing words: "We feel really comfortable here.
